Maple long bow

Maple long bow

Postby mysticguido » Thu Aug 28, 2008 12:00 pm

2 weeks ago I started to work on this bow. I ruffed it out and got it to bend nicely in floor tiller. It's 72" t2t 1.5" at the fades tapering to .25" at nocks when I get done. When I got back from watching a friends house I backed it with a cotton backing from Rudder bows, it is called Rainforest. Here is pic's of the backing.

Here is some pic's of the backing still drying, but I cut off the extra & You can see the Ipe handle.

I like doing wrapped wedge nocks so I'll thinking of doing them with some Black Walnut.

Here is the wedge nocks, I glue them on just to be safe, when finished I'll wrap them with sinew. I was going to use black walnut, But I also cut out a red elm handle for the Black walnut bow and used some pieces for the nock on this bow.

right now the nocks are .5" after the glue cures for 24 hrs I'll take them down to .25". They calling for a chance of rain so I'm going to hold off on tillering till Sunday.

Very cool project. I always like the look of anything made in Maple.

I can't wait to see the finished product!

Sunday I'll be starting another red oak pyramid bow 60" t2t, w/ a different snake skin backing. That bow is for a trade on a self knife and friend from new zealand made. Then come Sept,14th I'll be starting a Black walnut w/Red Elm handle bow.

Well I got to do some more scraping. I'm almost to 5", but needs more off the upper limb. Camera crapped out on me so I'll post pic's later. It just started to rain so I just some work done. I also gave the back it's first coat of Tru-oil. Darken up the art-skin some. I'll post pic's of that too. I also did the handle, The Ipe sucked it right up.

Stagg, it's mysticguido, Not mysticguide.

Yes, I'm glad anyone can use a crossbow in the archery season, It is a bow. If anyone feels that it's not a bow, then a compound isn't a bow either and should be taken out of archery season...

Back to the Real Bow. I was scouting Today and wasn't feeling to good, so no work. I'll be working on it Tomorrow. I'll be posting pic's too.

Stagg, It's really not hard to make a bow from a Board. This Maple bow, The wood board came from Lowe's It was a 1" X 2" X 72". With a few tools You could make your own bow.

Well I had a twist in the limbs and as I was removing wood to straighten them out I blow a limb. Snap.... Another bow in the fire pile... Next I'll be working with Black Walnut. The Maple was nice, but so far I do better with red Oak. Now it's time for the Walnut.
