njhunterkid. If you think you are nervous, try an old fart like me taking the test at the age of 59. They did not have any record of me taking the test back in the 60's. So there I was surrounded by youth, and they were all looking at me like I was from outer space.
You'll be fine, you will take a test first which is multiple choice. After that you do the field part. You will be giving a wooden imitation of a shotgun. Make sure you always keep the muzzle pointed up (all the time). They will pick three or four of you and simulate a pheasant hunt. You all be standing abreast and he (instructor) will say for instance, if a bird gets up here who takes the shot. Again keep the piece of wood pointed skyward. Is a piece of cake. Study like it was your final exam.
After wards if I remember correctly, you go back into the class room and you do another multiply choice. If you pass they send you to the shooting range. There you will shoot a shotgun (one will be provided to you) If you never shot a semi and you are used to another shotgun, by all means bring it. I presume your father will be with you. This way you will know how to handle the gun better.
If you bring your own make sure the action is open. The instructor will want to see it before you shoot it. If he asks you for it, make sure you look into the chamber to make sure is empty even though you know it is (he wants to see you check). After he looks at it he will handed back to you, when you take the gun from him with both hands you tell him "I got it" you again look into the chamber to make sure is empty, yes you know that it is but you are rechecking it. You then wait for his instruction to load. Make sure safety is on till you are ready to call "PULL" which he then will release a flier and you shoot at it. Whether you hit it or not is irrelevant. Is how you handle the weapon that they want to make sure you know. Good Luck and let us know how you make out
