Lansky Universal Sharpening System

Lansky Universal Sharpening System

Postby XexorZ » Tue Jun 10, 2008 5:10 pm

About two years ago I got sick of having a semi-sharp knife on me and started researching sharpening systems. I tell you I found the holy grail of inexpensive, fool-proof amazing sharpening systems around when I bought the Lansky Universal system.

It comes with several hones each with a different grit and can turn pretty much any knife into a razor-blade.

My only complaint is the wrist ache I get after using it for several hours sharpening dozens of knives. Other than that, this thing is the real-deal.

The only thing I would add to the system is some stropping compound and a leather sheet or belt. Once you have this you can literally make your knife sharp enough to shave with if you change the stock angle (which takes forever to do but if you don't mind sharpening your pocket knife frequently can give you a pocket-razor.)

Hunting knives to fillet knives, I love my Lansky

School me - what is he doing wrong?

My knives come out pretty damn sharp but I'm always game for another perspective.

I sure you know better then to hit the knife with the stone, need to be smooth...

Also you start at one end of the blade and in ONE stroke to the other, not stoping..

He needs to slow down, IMO..

I'll buy all that. In the end you need a smooth blade (for sure). Even pressure is important too. Over all the tool makes it really easy, though - I can't sharpen for crap without one.

Good points RED

Anyone know of a better tool that doesn't require electricity or a bank loan?

I use mine to sharpen small knives and some hunting knives...

All my good kitchen knives go to a professional Sharpener twice a year, and in between I ues a steel..

I also have a wet stone for my steel filet knives..
